Grass to Garden
by Tobi-Dawne Smith

Thinking about turning that patch of grass (called a lawn) into a lush, garden full of yummy veggies or lovely blooms?  There's a simple over-wintering plan that will help avoid a lot of work.

You'll need:
old newspapers or newsprint
straw
manure or compost

I'm not a gardener.  So you can bet that if I can do it, anyone can.  If you'd like to take a piece of your lawn back, and do something far more green with the space then this is the way to go.

This fall, before we get our first permanent snow fall, lay out a layer of newspapers.  Lay it directly on the grass in the area you'd like to convert to garden, and lay it four to six layers thick.  Follow that with a layer of straw (optional, but recommended).  Lastly, lay on some manure and/or compost.

Seriously.  That's it.  Come planting time in spring, you'll have a lovely patch of garden.

You can turn everything under using a spade, or plant straight into your compost/manure.

Happy gardening!
